2018 Golden Globe Race: our NV Ambassador
Jean-Luc Van Den Heede leads the way

Having left Les Sables d’Olonne at the start of the Golden Globe Race on 1 July this year for an eight-month journey, our NV Ambassador Jean-Luc Van Den Heede is the current front-runner according to the latest report, published on 5 September.

On this date, the eleven sailors still in the running in the 2018 Golden Globe Race, a non-stop, round-the world, single-handed and unassisted event, had arrived off the Cape of Good Hope.

It is Jean-Luc Van Den Heede who is blazing a trail into the Indian Ocean, at an average of 6 knots and 930 miles ahead of Mark Slats, lying second, who lost ground as he reached the southern hemisphere, and 1,050 miles ahead of Irishman Gregor McGuckin, at the back of the current podium.

Behind them, a rear guard led by Susie Goodall and Breton sailor Loic Lepage are making the most of a gentle breeze of around fifteen knots as they prepare to pass the coastline of Cape Town in South Africa and the famous Cape of Good Hope.

Since 1 July, using the same type of boats involved in the original event, the Golden Globe Race has marked the 50th anniversary of the Sunday Times Golden Globe Challenge, the legendary 1968 race which saw Sir Robin Knox-Johnston cross the finishing line after 313 days at sea circumnavigating the globe, and abandonment by his eight competitors.

NVEQUIPMENT is at the heart of the race as Jean-Luc Van Den Heede’s sponsor, supplying him with the equipment required for his on-board comfort.
