- 40 YEARS OF INNOVATION AND DESIGN -

Outdoor protection has become essential for all those who love the sea: a wintering tarpaulin to protect the boat from the rigours of winter, a sun canopy for the good of your health, a rear enclosure to give you space, allowing you to enjoy your boat, whatever the season...

Did you know that, around twenty years ago, no one really knew how to categorise Nvequipment’s range? Many people thought of our products as "a bit of tube" or "a piece of fabric": a simplistic view of our know-how which did not reflect the expertise in soft materials and mechanics offered by the men and women at NV.

We’re not just tarpaulin sellers, we have proven expertise in the technical sophistication and performance of our protective covers, subjected to severe environments and conditions. NV products offer style, protection, customisation and comfort, allowing our pleasure sailors to fully indulge their passion for the sea.

And for over twenty years, design has been at the heart of our product development process, providing the NV signature.

1ST ROOF COVER MODEL

 - DESIGNER: Jean-Yves Chevalier -

- 1986 -
1ST COMPANIONWAY COVER

 - DESIGNER: Jean-Yves Chevalier -

This first cover was manufactured without a specific size, with fibreglass hoops and a lacquered, high-strength fabric. It was tested by its owner, Jean-Yves Chevalier, who gradually improved it over the course of many trips to sea. The sheets were fitted at the front, with the cover being fixed. The front opening was soon added to ventilate the companionway. This was the first in a long line of models.

1ST BIMINITOP FOR CHARTERERS

 - DESIGNER: NV Design Office -

- 2001 -
HORIZON SPRAYHOOD
AND LARGE HOOD

- DESIGNER: NV Design Office & Ecole de Design de Nantes with Jean-Patrick Péché -

In its quest for style, NVequipment sought to develop flowing lines, perfectly suited to the boat design, and allowing seamless, optimal integration of the sailing boat roof hood or sprayhood into its surroundings. The high degree of transparency was a real innovation, and now has a legion of fans. The objectives were an attractive appearance, lightness and onboard safety. This brought design into the outdoor protective cover sector.

- 2003 -
ST REAR ENCLOSURE
ON A SAILING BOAT

- DESIGNER:  NV Design Office -

In northern Europe, pleasure sailors live on their boats. Being able to enclose the cockpit seemed natural to NV, yet represented a major first, and therefore a new technical challenge. The environment was far from favourable, with the boom often being low, and the height difficult to standardise for all boats, among other issues. Having a rear enclosure as part of the design of the boat’s living area was soon taken for granted by sailors on leisure craft, and later on cruisers and multi-hulls. But in 2003 the concept was ahead of the market. In 2016, being able to "enclose the cockpit" is now a common request.

- 2004 –
Creation of a range
of accessory bags

- DESIGNERS: NV Design Office & MC Design with Michel Chaillou -

The brief was to redesign the halyard bags, mast base bags, onboard yacht bags and storage bags for boats with engines. Round-table meetings with sailors offered us some excellent feedback. Adjusting technical and functional demands to suit production conditions while following a designer approach was a real challenge. Fifteen years later, pleasure sailors are still asking us for these bags which they helped to design. They were remarkably sturdy and easy to use.

- 2004 –
DESIGN OF THE FIRST
NV T-TOP

- DESIGNER: Michel Chaillou -

The shape of the hoops gives a special look. While the Americans were quick to understand this, the shape of the structures in Europe remained unsophisticated, and is still rather basic. NVequipment decided to study the entire structure of a T.TOP: the elegant jamb of a hoop base, the semi-automatic sliding of a sun cover, the double tubular base of a fixed structure...

- 2005 -
1ST REGATTA HOOD
ON A 35' SAILING BOAT

- DESIGNERS: NV Design Office & Tram Design -

A hood with taut lines, entirely foldable and modular, designed and developed in similar fashion to the very latest sports shoe: this was the goal of this study, conducted with the help of long-distance sailors. The concept was race-tested in the Transquadra, then in the Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Race, renowned for its difficulty. Every part was made and assembled by hand, and inspected in great detail. Based on this concept, adaptations were brought to market, notably on Pogos and Firsts, known for their sportiness, as well as on a Sun Fast.

DESIGN STUDIES FOR CRUISER MOTOR BOATS

- DESIGNER: Paule Guérin -

With the aim of refining and integrating the products into various motor boats, a design study was undertaken to examine the effect of colour on fabrics and provide a finishing touch, bringing real customisation to the product. The proportion between the surface of the fabric and the lighter or darker areas contributes to the overall balance. This is the spirit in which NV Design was created.

- 2013 -
FIXED “DOUBLE TOP” BIMINI & STRUCTURE DESIGN

- DESIGNER: Laurent Lamballais -

With the aim of upgrading the sun covers for multi-hull sailing-boat flybridges, our technical challenges were to improve:

1/ The appearance of the product’s metal structure, by reducing the number of legs on the fly and making the whole thing lighter for greater elegance.

2/ The perceived value of the product, by reducing the technical aspects visible beneath the product.

3/ The integration of features such as lighting.

- 2014 -
COCKPIT ENCLOSURE
FOR MULTIHULLS

- DESIGNER: Paule Guérin -

Our challenge was to demonstrate the aesthetic and perfectly integrated functionality of a cockpit enclosure on a multi-hull, and to envisage what a cosy, harmonious living area might look like, without encumbering the overall design. This study, conducted with the marketing department as a continuation of the previous one carried out on leisure and cruiser engines, fed into research on various atmospheres created by bringing together different fabrics, colours and inlaid motifs. NV Design makes valuable use of virtual applications, without the need to build them in real life.

- 2016 –
MULTIPLE BRAND PRODUCTS IN STORE

- DESIGNERS: NV Design Office
& Agence Comwell -

This multi-brand design stems from our desire to provide distributors with a selection of standard products dedicated to Leisure and Cruiser pleasure sailors. This range offers the benefit of being suitable for all boat brands and models, whatever their configuration, thanks to a single ‘standard’ sizing system. The idea of predefined dimensions facilitates access to these multi-brand products, particularly in Uship and AD stores.

We took things a step further by designing visual packaging for three of them which makes it possible to identify the NV brand in store. In this range, the colour scheme is limited. The seat covers come in two sizes, the single-size double cushion, and the limited edition Summertop. These products have been listed since 2016.

- 2016 –
VIRTUAL REALITY BY NV

- Designer: NV Design Office & DFM -

It has long been our aim to integrate cutting-edge tools into the process of developing new technologies, placing the customer at the very heart of the upstream product design procedure. As a complement to computer-aided design systems, Virtual Reality is the ideal technology for enabling development teams to make the right decisions on functional, aesthetic and ergonomic aspects, thanks to precise simulation of forms, materials and solutions. NV has integrated this technology and intends shortly to take this development a step further by offering it to pleasure sailors to help them truly envisage products and facilitate the purchasing process.

SOFT TOP
A CO-PRODUCTION

- Designer: NV Design Office
with Bénéteau/Lewmar -

Looking for a sun cover with great design and innovative functionality for its range of Sense sailing boats, Bénéteau commissioned two of its traditional partners to design a new product: Lewmar, a specialist manufacturer of boat equipment, and NVequipment, the European leader in outdoor protection for boats. This collaborative project required a good understanding of the needs and constraints of each stakeholder before going into production. According to Bénéteau, "It was a wonderful experience in lean management, which was completed in less than six months, from conception to fitting the product on the boat. The result? An NVequipment fabric which slides, allowing Bénéteau to offer its customers a living area in the cockpit sheltered from the sun and rain.
