Sailing in winter
Tips & Tricks

How to equip yourself for the cold

in complete safety

Winter doesn’t mean the end of outings for sailing enthusiasts. On the contrary, it’s a magical season for enjoying the sea in a unique atmosphere. To do so, the right preparation, both for you and your boat, is essential.

Dress according to the 3-layer rule

When sailing in winter, choosing the right clothing is crucial for your comfort and safety. Opt for the 3-layer rule:

First layer : Technical underwear is your first line of defence against the cold. Make sure it’s comfortable, seamless and made of breathable materials like microfiber or Polartec to efficiently evacuate perspiration.
Second layer : Fleeces and softshells are your thermal insulation. They trap warm air close to your body while releasing moisture to the outside, keeping you comfortable on the water.
Third layer : Your sailing jacket is your protection against the elements, such as wind, rain and sea spray. Choose a jacket to suit your sailing schedule and the season for optimal protection.

Damp control: a must on board

L’humi

Damp can quickly become a formidable enemy, especially when sailing in the winter. While an electric dehumidifier may be useful in port to keep the boat dry, it is of no use on the open sea. An appropriate heating system is therefore essential to keep the damp away on board.
In winter, when anchored, temperatures often drop sharply, generating a sensation of intense cold. Heating not only warms the interior of the boat, it also helps dry towels, kitchen linen and sailing clothes, enhancing comfort on board.

Choosing the right heater for your boat

On-board heating is essential for comfort, and several options are available on the market.

Water and air heaters for boats are among the most popular, appreciated for their efficiency and low energy consumption.

The choice of system depends on several factors,

such as the size of the boat, the number of cabins to be heated, the duration of cruising and the water temperature.

Accessories such as radiators and unit heaters also play a crucial role in ensuring even heat distribution on board.

Protect your boat for safe sailing

As well as protecting yourself, think of your boat. Nvequipment offers a wide range of outdoor cold weather protection products to enhance your comfort on board and protect your boat from the harsh winter weather:

Rear enclosures: effective protection against the cold, they create a physical barrier between the inside and outside of the boat. They help maintain a comfortable temperature on board, essential for winter sailing.

Curtains: An additional barrier against the external elements such as wind, rain and snow. They effectively keep the elements outside the boat, ensuring a more comfortable environment for occupants.

Side covers: effective protection against winter weather such as rain, snow, wind and even sea spray. They create a physical barrier between your boat and the elements, protecting its structure and equipment from any damage.

Full sprayhood: offers complete protection for the entire cockpit of the boat. Not only is your deck protected from the elements, but also the entire outdoor living space, offering maximum protection against rain, snow, wind and cold.

You’re sure to find what you’re looking for

For motorboats, choose a full sprayjhood, cockpit enclosure, interior curtains and side covers.
For sailboats, a rear enclosure fitted to your boat or a biminitop side cover are recommended for optimal protection.
